The Eternal Modern: a historical and contemporary museum of the barbican estate

22.2 barbican

Build with the old to create the new, re-envisage history to realise what could be, harness the past to be eternally modern. The Eternal Modern Museum is a lens into the landscape that fosters and re-frames our connection to its place and historical vitality. Through a contemporary language of form and materials, the museum connects with and continues to define architectural features of place – namely, the Barbican’s origins as a Roman fort, its emergence from WWII and the design and construction of C, P + B’s architecture. As such, the museological experience offers insight into the creative, regenerative and expressive potential of incorporating historical reference in contemporary design, and ultimately, its importance as a foundation for considering present and potential realities.
